Burnie & Peni’s
Memorial
Memories of Burnie…
Burnie was and will always be my best friend---May 23,
2003---June 20th 2019.
I want to thank Nancy Shepherd for educating me and
being there for the 16 years we shared our lives with him,
she opened up a new world for me. With her encouragement
I had him doing tricks 2 days after a got him!
We were not club members then and behind in the pig
world not knowing how as everybody else had pigs way
before we did. Melissa Maxwell really helped me learn more
and suggested I could do shows with him! At that time I
thought all pigs did tricks! Not true! Burnie was unique
because he loved his tricks! That's why he was called "The
Trick Master". He did many shows at the Pet Expo fair that
used to be held twice a year in Hillsboro. There were also
shows at local feed stores to promote Dr. Cole's mini pig
feed. I also want to thank Chris Patton who has been my right
hand person to help with all of Burnie’s shows.
In 2009 Burnie developed a lump on his jaw so we took
him to see Dr. Cole. The diagnosis was “Lumpy Jaw”, an
infection in the jaw bone. This condition is very resistant to
treatment but Dr. Cole tried numerous conventional and non-
conventional treatments and remained in a supportive role
even after she retired and up until his last day. When he
passed Burnie’s condition had progressed to double lumpy
Jaw.
After Dr. Cole retired, I found Dr. Blake. In 2015. Dr.
Blake was working at Woodburn Veterinary Hospital and one
of the few local Vets that would work on Pet Pigs. Now days
he is a mobile now and recommended by the NWMPA. Dr.
Blake is also the Vet we use for the club sponsored vet
clinics. He has proved unbelievably helpful and supportive
through Burnie’s problems.
In 2012 Burnie started to suffer from noticeable
arthritis at 8 years old which was very worrisome! I
distinctly remember Dr. Cole telling me “the lumpy jaw
won't get him but the arthritis will.”
About 2 weeks before we had to euthanize him he
started walking on his back ankle's not on his hoof, Dr. Blake
increased his Gabapentin and no improvement, his whole
back end was out now, we tried Prednisone no luck, it was
something in his spine perhaps a pinched nerve, or a tumor,
or possible arthritis in his spine. It was obvious he was in
pain and could no longer get up or walk without two people
supporting his body with towels, which was no easy task for
Ron and me! It was then that we made the choice to
euthanize him. The process went very peacefully, again,
thanks to Dr. Blake.
A heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one for being
there for Ron and I. We loved him so much and his memory
will be with us forever! ~ Ron/Patty Hill

Memories of Peni…
MY ADVENTURES WITH “PENI THE PILL”
March 2006 - This is her history
It all started with an e-mail. “When can I bring her to
Portland she screamed, the sooner the better!” Soon she
arrived at my door with a darling little pinto female pig on a
leash, she was so sweet. When I first laid eyes on her it was
love at first sight‖. Then I came to my senses and said “I can’t
keep her! I already have a pig and it’s a full-time job!” Then, I
thought, hum? Maybe we can put her in our foster care until
we find her a new home. My husband, Ron, and I kept talking
about her and decided to bring her into our happy home. That
was just the BEGINNING!
The first two days she moved in, she loved everybody,
and everybody loved her. Day three, that all changed! That’s
when she became “Peni the Pig from *&%#@”. All she did was
scream. If I told her no or tried to discipline her or even if my
husband talked or walked by her, she would let out this
bloody scream. She had to get her own way! I decided then
and there that I was going to break her of this habit or die
trying.
The first thing I tried was a spray bottle. After that
failed, I tried using a child gate and backing her up in the
corner. That also failed but only after she bruised my legs.
Then I tried getting down on the floor and screaming louder
and longer than she could and that worked. After several days
of this, however, I lost my voice. I failed again! Then I got a
whistle but that was just too annoying to EVERYONE. Then I
tried a dog whistle and along with pushing her outside and let
her think about it! IT WORKED!! It took me three months or
more, but she was 99% broken. What a learning experience
this was for us but she’s a much happier pig now and so are
we!
This kind of thing happens when people mismanage
their pigs. Many are tossed away or in rescues from over-
feeding and lack of discipline. You must be consistent because
they are extremely intelligent and stubborn. Consistency,
that’s the remedy.
I must thank Nancy Shepherd, Jo Marie Cope, Melissa
Maxwell, Doug and Jeannine Arthur and John Vincent for all
their advice, support and my repeated phone calls. I also
want to thank my husband and our room-mate for all their
support, understanding, and tolerance.
If you need any help, feel free to contact me. I might
have the answer after all these trials and errors. ~ By Patty

We love our little Peni!!!! She loves us too! As time
went on Peni turned out to be a nice pig!
Arthritis, hoof abscess since March 2024, stopped
eating and diarrhea with blood in it and maybe a tumor with
cancer in her guts also got a blooding nose after she passed,
I'm thinking she was bleeding out. The vet did a good
peaceful job.
RIP ~ Peni ~ 19 Years old
